Be Prepared When Warm Weather Returns: Signs Your AC Compressor Needs Repairs

Winter may be in full-swing right now, but warmer weather will be here before you know it. When the warm weather does return, you'll want to be ready to use your air conditioner as soon as possible. However, AC compressors have a way of wearing out, even when they're not in use. If that happens to yours, you could be without cold air if you don't take care of the repairs in a timely manner. Unfortunately, compressor problems can be difficult to identify, especially if you don't know what you're looking for, which is where this guide comes in handy. If you experience any of the issues described here when you start up your air conditioner next spring, call your repair technician immediately. Your compressor could be in need of repairs.

Your Air Conditioner is Shaking

Under normal conditions, your main air conditioning unit should hold steady during operation. That means you shouldn't be able to see any shaking, shimmying, or vibrating while your air conditioner is running. If you notice that your air conditioner won't stand firm during operation, the compressor could be in the process of failing. Repairing or replacing your compressor will help stop the movement.

Your Compressor has Stopped

If your air conditioner stops functioning properly, one of the first things you should do is conduct a visual inspection of the outside unit. When your air conditioner is running through a cooling cycle, you should be able to see the fan rotating and hear the compressor running. Inside your home, you should be able to feel cold air coming from the vents. If the fan is rotating, but the compressor isn't running, and you've got warm air coming through the inside vents, you need to call for repairs right away. Your compressor will need to be repaired or replaced before your air conditioner will function properly again.

Your Circuit Breaker is Touchy

If your circuit breaker decides to be touchy once spring arrives, the problem might be located in your air conditioner compressor. Unfortunately, most people don't equate circuit breaker problems with their air conditioner. However, once warm weather arrives, and you start using your air conditioner on a daily basis, your circuit breaker may be the first sign that your compressor is about to fail. If your circuit breaker becomes touchy this spring, have your air conditioner compressor inspected for signs of damage.

Don't get left with nothing but hot air. If you experience any of the problems described above when you start your AC back up this next spring, call for refrigeration repair services right away.

About Me

Avoiding Air Conditioning Problems

Last summer the unthinkable happened. My air conditioner failed on a day when it was over a hundred degrees outside. I was devastated, frustrated, and most of all, sweaty. Fortunately, a kind repair technician came out and helped me to get the system fixed the same day. After things were working, I took the time to ask how to avoid air conditioning problems in the first place. The technician gave me some great tips, including avoiding blocking my air returns. I also learned how to replace my air filter, which made a huge difference. Check out this blog to learn about HVAC.
